Harvest in Russia Threatened by Diesel Fuel Shortage

Russia has begun the 2026 harvest with a severe shortage of diesel fuel, threatening the pace of crop harvesting and the survival of small farms. The most critical situation is observed in the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, as well as in the Rostov region, where grain crops ripen first. As of July 1, only 1.3-1.5 million hectares have been harvested in Russia, which is almost three times less than in the same period of 2025 (4.2-4.6 million hectares). Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev denies the existence of systemic problems in the agricultural sector; however, no official statistics on harvested areas have been provided. The diesel shortage also exacerbates the reduction in sown areas: spring crops are sown 11.3% less, and winter crops are 7.4% less. Farmers have only 7-10 days to harvest the ripened grain, or else the grain will shed. In the Rostov region, a loss of about 15% of the harvest is predicted. Fuel dispensing limits at gas stations range from 20 to 200 liters, which does not meet the needs of the machinery. Small and medium-sized farms, lacking reserves, are particularly suffering from the crisis, which could lead to a decline in profitability and a deterioration in the quality of the harvest.
